What is Tantra?
Tantra is a spiritual practice rooted in Indian traditions, dating back to the 5th century CE. The word "tantra" is derived from the Sanskrit words "tanoti" (expansion) and "trayati" (liberation), signifying the expansion of consciousness and liberation from suffering. Tantra is a highly esoteric and complex system of practices, rituals, and philosophies designed to help individuals realize their true nature and achieve a state of spiritual awakening.
Different Kinds of Tantra
There are numerous schools of tantra, with practices and teachings varying significantly across traditions. Some of the most prominent types of tantra include:
Hindu Tantra: Hindu tantra, also known as Agama or Shakti tantra, is the oldest and most widely practiced form of tantra. It focuses on the worship of deities, especially the Divine Mother (Shakti) and her consort Shiva. White tantra, also known as the "right-hand path" or "Dakshinachara," is characterized by its focus on asceticism, self-discipline, and the internalization of spiritual energies. This path emphasizes practices such as meditation, breathwork, yoga, and mantra recitation to purify the mind and body, helping practitioners attain higher states of consciousness and spiritual enlightenment. In white tantra, sexual energy is often sublimated or transformed into more refined forms of spiritual energy.
The white path is considered a more orthodox approach to tantra, as it follows traditional guidelines and moral codes. It is often viewed as a safer and more gradual path to spiritual growth, as it places a strong emphasis on self-control, renunciation, and adherence to ethical principles.
Red tantra, also known as the "left-hand path" or "Vamachara," embraces the use of taboo and transgressive practices to achieve spiritual awakening. Both paths have their merits and challenges, and the choice between them depends on the individual's predisposition, spiritual goals, and personal preferences. It is crucial to approach either path with respect, commitment, and proper guidance to ensure a safe and fulfilling spiritual journey.
I personally try to integrate my interpretation of tantra into my day to day life if and when I can. We do not live in a world that supports this lifestyle, so I do not put pressure on myself to always be in this state.
